Yes, it is likely he was in Changi POW camp. I know he wasn't in Pudu Gaol KL as I've a complete list of the POWs there. It would obviously help if you knew his unit or battalion. You say he was recruited in India but did he join a British Army unit or an Indian Army unit? I will be looking at some POW lists at the Imperial War Museum hopefully in April - they are not complete lists - so will keep an eye out for the name. The other source of information is the Public Records Office at Kew, London - they have POW index cards with short captivity details. You would need to visit there or get a researcher.
