Transcript of Sherrod Sims Will (1730-1825) Lancaster District, SC
I have NO connection at all to Sherrod (that I know of!).Just happened to stumble across a transcript of a transcript of his will, abstracted in a book on our local history.I thought someone out there would be thrilled to know this!It seems a local man in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana named Richard Graves had a judgment against him.In order to pay the judgement, a slave in his home named Jenny was seized to be sold as payment. His wife Polly Lucy Graves, alias Mary Lucy Graves, objected, saying Jenny was her property, given to her in her father's will.As proof, two certified copies (dated August 19, 1842) were produced as evidence.According to the author of this history book, the suit can be found at the Ouachita Parish Louisiana Clerk of Court Office. "Mary L. Graves et all vs. Hemkin & Stevens, Sherriff of Ouachita Parish, 1841", filed February 27, 1841.The will was originally dated March 4, 1813 and was attested in Lancaster District November 21, 1825.It names eight living children:Sarah, Elliott, Jude Howel (a daughter), Ashbourn, Elizabeth Anderson Howell, Sherrod, Stephen and Polly Lacy Graves.A deceased daughter named Fanny Hammond is also mentioned.Since Lancaster wills were destroyed, this is a rare treasure indeed!
