My 2 cous 1 removed was Gavin Turnbull SIMONDS, b 1881 d. 1971. He was known as Viscount Simonds, and was Lord Chencellor 1951-1954.
Re Devonshire relationship, I sort of doubt it. Gavin was appointed Justice of the High Court in 1937 and knighted 8 Mar (1937?). He had a distinguished legal career, but was never in the limelight before his appointment as Lord High Chancellor (in 1951). He was chairman of the National Arbitration Tribunal from 1940 to 1944. As Mr. Gavin Turnbull Simonds, K.C., as Lord Simonds was known before his elevation to the peerage, he was the leading barrister in the Chancery Division. He is a native of Basingstoke and lived at Sparsholt, near Winchester.
Is this what you were looking for? I hope so!!
Cheers--Terry Simonds
