I believe James Rumsey was one of the first inventors of the steamboat. John Fitch was another. In John Fitch papers, he writes that Alexander Lewis received the heavy duty keelboat patent from Thomas Jefferson in 1789. He was given that patent when George Washington was sworn into office as President by Judge Robert R Livingston.

Robert Fulton married Judge Livingston's sister.

If your a Carbonneau, your connected here someplace even if it is more then several generations later. As you said, it's what this family is doing. From what I can see, they have been doing it since the year 1066.
