Elias Sims of Fort Screven, Savannah, Georgia

Need further information on Elias Sims. I have traced him in the Military records from the enlistment papers that said he was born in Gallia Co., Ohio in July 1849. He was discharged at Fort Cameron, Utah in 1876. Then I mysteriously found him at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas in 1900. Then he went to Fort Screven, Savannah, Georgia. There he died. Somehow he married in New York to a Mary. He had two children born in New York; Ella born 1892 and Joseph born 1896,Francis M. born in 1901 in Texas, and two children born in Georgia; Annie born in 1903 and Mary born in 1905. Mary, widow, is listed in the 1910 census with 4 of their 5 children in Savannah, Georgia.
Did Elias have any brothers?
I have been unable to locate him in the 1850 or 1860 census records with any family.
Tradition states that Franklin Simms' brother was killed in Custers Army. All Simms references there lead to Missouri or Canada. I'm stuck on my Simms research at this point so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Penny Simms
