Parents of Mary SIMONS or SIMMONS, Litchfield, CT
I am seeking the parents of Mary SIMONS / SIMMONS of Litchfield, Connecticut. Here is what I know.
[1] Mary Simons married Leyming BRADLEY on 19 Sep 1830 in the Town of Litchfield, Litchfield County. Source: Connecticut Town Marriages (Barbour Collection).
[2] Her husband was actually Leaming Hawkins Bradley, son of Horace Bradley and Hannah Twitchell, as confirmed by the book Genealogical and Family History of Central New York, Vol. III, by William Richard Cutter. Their son Sherman Abernethy Bradley gave his parents' names on two marriage records. In 1859 they were recorded as Leman H. Bradley and Mary C. Bradley. In 1882 they were recorded as L. H. Bradley and Mary Simons. The name Leaming was OFTEN misspelled!
[3] Mary was born in the Town of Litchfield, based on the Barbour records of the marriage that show her "b. Litchfield."
[4] She likely was born about 1811 or 1812 based on the 1840 Census that shows the adult woman in the household of Leaming H. Bradley as being under 30, believed to be Mary. If she was born in 1811 she would have been 29 while if born in 1812 she would have been 28. And she would have been 18 or 19 when she married.
[5] In the 1810 Census for Litchfield County, the census closest to Mary's birthdate, only one Simons / Simmons household appears in the Town of Litchfield. This is theJob Simons household with 3 males, 4 females. Oldest male 26-44 age, namely Job. One female over 45, one 26-44; 2 males and 2 females under 10.
[6] Research shows that Job Simmons married a woman named Arsenath / Arseneth. They lived beyond the year of the 1850 Census in Litchfield and are buried in the Headquarters Cemetery, Town of Litchfield. Thus we have their dates of death and estimated years of birth that are consistent with the census ages.
[7] On August 7, 1820, Job Simmons was enumerated in the Town of Litchfield census with a household of seven people, with two engaged in agriculture. Among the three males were one each in these age ranges: 26-44, 16-25 [this one was also in special 16-18 range], and 10-15. Among the four females were one under 10, two 10-15 and one 26-44. Job, born about 1779, would have been 41, his wife Arseneth born about 1883 so 37. The female under 10 could be Mary Simons / Simmons.
[8] Job and Arseneth Simmons seem like good candidates to be Mary's parents but I am looking for confirmation. This couple appears in genealogy material with just two daughters Caroline [b. 1804] and Fanny B. [1814-1818]. This includes the book History of the Simmons family: from Moses Simmons, 1st, (Moyses Symonson) ship "Fortune" 1621 to and including the eleventh generation, by Lorenzo Albert Simmons, 1930.
That decade between Caroline and Fanny leaves room for the birth of other children -- and in fact the 1810 Census shows there were 4 children under 10 in the household, while the 1820 Census shows two males and three females under 18. So clearly children are missing from family trees.
I have used varied sources to get this far. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.
Barbara
