George Silverthorn in California 1852
This is a repost from 1998.I attended a Wintu descendant's 85th birthday on Sunday.Mary Jane Stevenson has done a lot of research on trying to find her way back grandpa, George Silverthorn. There is a historical site located in Shasta County, CA called Silverthorn's Ferry.A son, Rory operated this ferry for many years until Shasta Dam went in.There is a cave located high in the mountains where George Silverthorn explored and left his name written in lamp smoke, I have seen it.His Indian family was pretty well educated for the time and place way back then. If anyone has a hint, I would be most happy to pass along to Mary Jane.

Dr George Silverthorn was born 1816 in England according to census records. He came to the Pit River (Shasta County, Ca) as early as 1852. He was one of the original stockholders in the Williams and Kellinger Gold, Silver and Mining Company. George took a Wintu Indian lady named Lucy for his wife, They had 5 children, Rory (1855) Mary (1859) Patrick (1858) Tillie (unk) and William (1864). There has been correspondence that says that George may be the son of Joseph Silverthorn and Jane Chisholm of Ontario, Canada. Thank you for any help. Donna Stapp Redding, (Shasta Co.)
