Hello--Wonderful to find this listing.
I am a decendant of B. F. Wharton who was married to Caroline S. Silliman. My middle name is Silliman and I have just now started researching that name.
In a post from Keith Silliman, Dated March 17,2001 he states that Caroline and B. F had 6 children.Would sks please send me their names and dates of birth.I know of Frank P Wharton and Henry S (illiman). Wharton.
Caroline died between 1850(she is in that census) and 1859 When B. F. remarried.
The Bears book for W. Feliciana Parish, LA shows a marriage between William Silliman and Margaret A. Irvin dated 12/22/1813. This is surely the William and Margaret who helped found Silliman Institute.
The 1850 cenusus for East Feliciana shows Ann Silliman, age 63 living with B. F. Wharton and Caroline.
Is this Ann a niece of William and the mother of Caroline Silliman Wharton?
Also, I have a copy of a diary of Sallie Tomkies. She was the niece of K. Epps Wharton (B F Wharton's 2nd wife). They lived at Welcome Hall, a plantation type home in De Soto Parish that was famous in its day.Sallie outlines in detail her years spent there as a child.
She speaks of the children and grandchildren of B F Wharton.
This document was transcribed by the WPA and is filed at the Louisiana State Library.
I can provide an interested party with copies of the info that is drectly related to the Silliman decendants in there.
Please let me hear back from you.
