Hiya,
I think I can add to this a bit. Marie van Rensselaer in the next generation is named after John Sill's wife. Dunkin Sill is frequently mentioned in the Stillwell family Genealogy, "The history of Captain Richard Stillwell, son of Lieutenant Nicholas Stillwell" Stillwell, John E. 1930.
Lydia Beekman van Rensselaer b April 8, 1825 m
John Sill April 25, 1849.
Parents of Lydia Beekman van Rensselaer are
Father: Gen. John Sanders van Rensselaer (google him and
count the hits)
this is a major US family so info is available
at Ancestor.com. I will continue the maternal.
Mother: Ann Dunkin married him on March 12, 1816.
Her parents were
Father: Robert Henry Dunkin of Philadelphia
Mother: Elizabeth Watkins, daughter of Dr. John and Lydia
(Stillwell) Watkins
Switching then to "The Henry Genealogy" Eldridge, William Henry, 1915
We find on page 177, " he was accompanied by his sister, Mrs. Ann Dunkin, widow of Capt. Robert(sic) Dunkin of the Royal Navy. She died June 20, 1832 and was buried in the burying ground of the old Pine Street Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. Her daughter, Ann Dunkin married March 2, 1816, John Sanders van Rensselaer of Van Rensselaer Manor, Albany, New York. (This is incorrect, Ann Dunkin was orphaned and lived with her Grandmother ANN, confirmed BFD)
Going back to the Stillwell, we find the note on page 118,
"The Parents of Robert Henry Dunkin were Capt. Robert(sic) Dunkin of the British Navy (lost with his ship off the Coast of Nova Scotia, in 1776) and his wife Ann Henry, who was born June 4, 1740 at Coleraine, County Derry, Ireland. She died June 20, 1832, in Philadelphia where she is buried. The Dunkin China, owned by the Sill family, bears the Dunkin Arms, the crest being a ship."
Adding confirmation from the Navy List, we find ROBERTS Dunkin, a Lieutenant in the British Navy. He dies young, leaving much prize to his wife, Ann Henry.
So Robert Henry Dunkin's parents are
Father: Lieutenant Roberts Dunkin, R.N. (maybe Capt.)
Mother: Ann Henry
This data is all confirmed by and enhanced upon in "The Diary of Benjamin Faneuil Dunkin" in the SC Historical Society. This document also confirms at least 5 brothers of Roberts Dunkin, two of who are in the US. I have confirmed all of their existances and connections at least twice.
One brother John Dunkin returns to Ireland to live with another Brother, David Dunkin, Curate and Treasurer of Connor. Another Brother, Edmond lives in Medford, Mass. and his son Benjamin Faneuil Dunkin, HC 1811, is Chancellor of South Carolina during the Civil War.
The last confirmed brother is Sir William Dunkin, Supreme Court, Calcutta, Madras in British India. He married Eliza or Elizabeth Blacker. His daughter Letitia m Sir Frances Workman MacNaghton, Chief of the MacNaghton Clan. They are extremely well documented in the Blacker genealogy, Burkes Peerage, Landed Gentry, etc...More topical however is,
"The Chiefs of the Clan MacNachtan", by Angus MacNaghtan in which we find the father of Roberts Dunkin and his brother is
John Dunkin, High Sheriff of County Antrim in Ireland. His mother is more problematic...May be one of two women.
Lots more on this but you have a bunch of the main sources. They are all available on Heritage quest.com if you can find a library that subscribes to it...
Hope this helps.
Benjamin Dunkin Adams Jr.
