All Sikes and Sykes families who have ancestors who moved into and/or through Tennessee are encouraged to locate a known male descendant of your family and ask this male descendant to join the Sikes/Sykes Families DNA Project. This appears to be the best possible method of discovering the ancestors of these families. Standard documentary search sources have been able to connect most of these families to Virginia and North Carolina and existing participants in the DNA Project have received test results that indicate we can complete the extensive documentary research of Dennis Maguire and Otis Sikes if more of the male descendants will join the DNA Project. Dennis and Otis have identified many of the early ancestors and their descendants but documentary evidence to complete their work is missing and might never be located. The DNA test results of these families begin with Kit #45339 and are represented by the results shaded in blue. The family members identified by Dennis and Otis can be reviewed at Sikes and Sykes in the South. The Tennessee families that have been identified who could benefit from this testing are as follows:
Howell and Jesse Sikes of Lincoln County in 1820.
James Sikes of White County in 1820.
Jacob and Warren Sykes of Montgomery County in 1820.
Benjamin O. Sykes of Warren County in 1820.
Bernard Sikes of Henderson County in 1830.
William Sikes of Humphreys County in 1830.
William and James Sikes of Sullivan County in 1830.
Josiah Sykes of McMinn County in 1830.
Drury Sikes of Rhea County in 1830 and Meigs County in 1840.
James and William Sykes of Benton County in 1840.
Dempsey Sikes of Rhea County in 1840.
Joshua Sikes of Jefferson County in 1840.
Anyone who knows a direct male descendant of the above families is encouraged to contact Art Sikes who is the coordinator of the Sikes/Sykes DNA Project if you need more information or would like to participate in this important effort.
We believe that the ancestors of many of the early Tennessee Sikes and Sykes families have been identified by Dennis and Otis using standard documentary research, implemented by DNA testing. These families are as follows:
Jonas, Thomas, and Jesse Sikes of Rutherford County.
Jonas Sykes of Madison County.
Joshua Sikes of Smith County.
Arthur and Samson Sikes of Stewart County.
Jonas Sikes of Henderson and Bedford County.
Naturally, additional DNA testing of the male descendants of these families will further identify more ancestors and we will eventually be able to contribute to the work of Dennis and Otis.
