Hi Mary, Sally R. Blassingame married Stokeley D. Massengale 20 Sept 1820 in Lawrence Co. AL. I don't know who all of their children were, but I did find a guardianship record in the Chambers Co. courthouse where Benjamin Blassingame filed a guardianship report for Eleanor Massengale and Elvira (or Elzira?) Massengale, children of Stokely D. Massengale, dec'd. Right now, I can't find my notes on that so I don't have the date, but it was in the 1840s. On the 1850 census of Chambers Co. AL, you will see Eleanor Massingale, age 20 b.AL in the hh of Benjamin Blassingame. You will also see in the hh of Thomas Blassingame, Elvira (last name ditto with Blasingame), who was not his daughter, but was his neice Elvira Massengale, daughter of his sister Sally. As you know, she married George C. Jenkins. In looking at later census records, her name might have been Elzira as you probably know. Taking a look at the 1830 Madison Co. AL census, you will see Stokeley D. Massengale, with 2 males < 5, 2 males 5-10, 1 male 30-40, 1 fem < 5, and 1 fem 20-30. The next hh is Solomon Massengale, 1 male age 60-70, 1 fem age 60-70. I presume that Solomon was the father of Stokeley D.(Donelson?) Massengale. As for the parentage of Sally R. Blassingame, there is some disagreement among researchers, but I think it's pretty clear. From the Massengale guardianship, we know that Benjamin Blassingame (b.1797 in SC), Thomas Blassingame (b.1804 in KY) and Sally R. Blassingame (b.1800-1810) were siblings. The tie that binds is a man named Larkin Venable. Larkin Venable married "Molly Blasingen"(sic) 25 Nov 1811 in Warren Co. KY (Bk A, pg279). Looking at the 1810 census of Warren Co. KY, we see "Polly Blasingame", over 45, with 3 males < 10, 2 males 10-16, 2 males 16-26, 1 fem < 10, and 1 fem 16-26. Larkin Venable was in Lawrence Co. AL in 1820, as the extant state census shows, 1m > 21, 1m < 21, 1f > 21, 2f < 21). There are no Blassingames or Massengales on that census, and I think the Massengales were in Madison Co. Benjamin Blassingame married Elizabeth Musick in Shelby Co. 24 July 1821. Larkin Venable died in 1835. On the 1850 census for Lawrence Co. AL, "Molly Venable", age 81 born VA, is living with the family of Robert Blassingame, age 56 born SC, presumably her son. Back to Warren Co. KY, there is a surviving will for Thomas Blassingame, dated 1804, probated March 1805. Says "my wife and her children" but they were not named. I am sided with those who believe that the parents of James, Turner, Elizabeth, Robert, Jesse, Benjamin, Sarah, Woodson, and Thomas Blassingame are Thomas Blassingame (d.1804/05 Warren Co. KY) and Mollie Rountree. I hope this helps your research, and would be happy to be of assistance in the future, if possible. For the record, I descend from Julia Ann Blassingame, d/o Thomas Blassingame and Jane Emily Musick, and Ellison Sikes, s/o Matthew and Eleanor Sikes. They married in Chambers Co. in 1848 and moved to Leake Co. MS before 1850. -Tim Upton Notify Administrator about this message?
