Carol, Do I have any earlier Sidgwicks? It's a good question!! I think you may also have seen a post of mine on another message board, where I responded to your mention of a Sidgwick born in Heighington. This is what I have from the 1881 Census: Census Place: Houghton Le Side, Co. Durham Dwelling: Houghton Le Side Thomas SIDGEWICK Head U Male 34 Houghton Le Side, Co. Durham Farmers Of 252 Acres Matthew SIDGEWICK Brother U Male 28 Houghton Le Side, Co. Durham Joint Occupier Dorothy SIDGEWICK Mother W Female 64 Coniscliff, Co. Durham Annuitant Francis SIDGEWICK Son U Male 17 Heighton, Co. Durham Farmers Son Harriet CHARLTON Cousin U Female 18 Houghton Bank, Co. Durham Annuitant Dorothy CHARLTON Cousin U Female 16 Houghton Bank, Co. Durham Annuitant James JACKSON Serv U Male 19 UK Farm Serv Indoor (RG11 4891/79 p.3) and next door: Census Place: Houghton Le Side, Co. Durham Dwelling: Houghton Le Side Margaret SIDGEWICK Head W Female 84 Evenwood, Co. Durham Farmer Of 8 Acres William SIDGEWICK Son U Male 42 Houghton Le Side, Co. Durham Farmers Son (RG11 4891/79 p.3) I *think* the 17 year old Francis *may* be the 38 year old William Francis at Morton Palms in 1901. In 1901 his place of birth is given as Denton - which is where he married in 1894. I haven't yet ascertained who his parents were: I haven't yet found his birth registration, and the Census doesn't give too many clues. If the 1881 Census is to be believed, Thomas is his father ... but Thomas is unmarried, and would have been only 17 when Francis was born. Age-wise William on the neighbouring farm is a more plausible age to be his father ... and could maybe explain why he was "officially" William Francis on his marriage certificate, and once he was living ith his own family. Maybe at home he was always known as Francis to avoid confusion with the William next door ... The 1861 Census entries provide no further clues: both Margaret and Dorothy were already widowed so there are no information about male members of *that* generation either!
