I would like to join the Sides DNA project. My great-grandfather, John Sides, came from Baton Rouge, LA, after the Civil War. However, I am not sure that his name was really Sides. I believe he was a neighbor of a nearby family named Sides--or he may have been raised by that family. Whatever it was, he did not return home after he fought for the Illinois Volunteers in the War. He said he traveled the world before he stopped to marry my great-grandmother in Colorado. However, I believe he really was in Iowa and South Dakota, rather than on a sailing ship.

I think his real name in Baton Rouge was John Charles Sides or John Charles Murphy--both names he used somewhat interchangeably.

The DNA test would clear this up, I believe. That way, if I am of Murphy lineage, I can pursue that part of my genealogy.
