I too am from the John Sidebottom line, (Hi again, Joy). It's easily conceivable that there's more than just a little "Indian blood" in Sidebottoms...Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri...? The female lines, the wives of these pioneering men could have easily brought Indian blood. My own paternal grandmother Maud Mary Stickney Sidebottom actually received some kind of settlement from the government back in the 40s. My dad told me that Grandma had pitch black hair that was still ungrey when she died. My aunts have intimated that they were told to "keep the secret because back in the 20s and 30s they would have been mistreated for being a "breed". If you look at a picture of her grandmother Mariah Jane Helvey Stickney, you can easily see Indian features of prominent cheekbones and raven black hair.
