1800s SICKAFUS Family: MD > OH > IN > IL
One 1800s family that used the spelling SICKAFUS had left Maryland, lived in Ohio in the late 1820s and early 1830s, then from there they moved to Elkhart County IN about 1835 and by 1850 to Cass County MI.Here are some early details, starting as early as I can:
George Siegenfoos, likely born no later than about 1750, had two sons Jacob and Abraham, both born by about 1775. In the 1790 census, George lived in Frederick County MD as did two others with similar surnames, John and Peter who had larger families. After George died, deed records there in 1792 list his family members: his widow Margaret and his two sons Jacob and Abraham Sigerfoos.
Abraham Sigerfoos married Mary Cook. In those early days I've found only one Cook family in the area. That was the family of Geroge Cook, a slave owner and possibly Mary's father.Abraham is missing from some censuses, but one shows him in Hagerstown or Elizabeth Township in Washington County MD. It is said that Abraham was crippled from rheumatism and refused to leave Maryland. So his wife and the five children were the ones who moved to OH, IN then MI, as mentioned earlier. Their children were Margaret, John George "SICKAFUS" (b. 10 Mar 1800), Jacob (b. 18 Feb 1803), Susanna, and Abraham R. (b. 22 Jul 1811).
John George SICKAFUS married Elizabeth (b. 26 Jul 1807) on 15 Dec 1825, had eight children and died 26 May 1851. (There is a record in Frederick County MD of a marriage license dated 16 Aug 1825 between John SIGAFOOS and Ann Elizabeth FILLER, a close match but so far no conclusive proof that this is the couple.) Their children were listed in the Sigerfoos Family booklet in this order:
08 Jul 1828 Jacob SICKAFUS; m. Martha L. HERENDEEN
12 Apr 1826 Sarah Jane SICKAFUS
07 Sep 1830 Emanuel SICKAFUS; m. Lisetta A. HALL
31 Dec 1832 David J. SICKAFUS; m. #1 Margaret KELLY, #2 Mary FANROTE, #3 Harriet MINNICK
30 Jan 1834 James J. SICKAFUS; struck by lightning in Civil War)
06 Aug 1837 John SICKAFUS; m. Sylvia A. HALL
?? ??? 18?? William SICKAFUS
23 Sep 1848 Sophia Ella SICKAFUS; m. Nathan BRAGG
Some descendants lived in IN, MN, CO, MO, but most of the other children and their descendants lived in Illinois: Bethany, Lerna, Sullivan, Green Valley, Findlay, and Decatur IL.
I am descended from John George SICKAFUS' brother Abraham R. SIGERFOOS.
