Jonas Shutts, b. 18 March 1814 in Claverack, Columbia Co., NY, was the eldest of 12 children of whom Jonas and 5 sisters survived to 1877. His father was John Shutts who in 1815 removed to Montgomery Co., NY until 1829 when he moved to Oswego Co., NY at Hannibal. In 1834 Jonas married Clarissa A. Demott also of Hannibel. They had 3 children: Laura E., Mary E., & John who d..y. Clarissa died in 1840. In 1841 Jonas married Emeline C. Lane, daughter of Col. Roswell Lane. They had 7 children: Alvina A., Clarissa A., George W., Gilbert J., Sarah E., Lettie who dy., & Eva D. John, the father of Jonas, died in 1863.
