Hello Shutt seekers,

My wife just disovered some information about my Henry Shutt that I did not know. This may be a significant bit of information which may help me to isolate him and his earlier family lineage.

A local NC state historian, Allen Dew, has recorded data about cemeteries in Durham County, Orange County, and Person County, NC; and has included data on some lost or forgotten cemetery data. From this latter catagory, he listed the following:

>>Shutt, Henry   (b. - d.)

Henry Shutt, The Hatter, D. April Or May, 1811, Who Lived With His Wife Elizabeth And Their Children From 1803 Till 1811 On Lot 15 (The Colonial Inn Lot), Is Known To Have Been Buried On The Lower Portion Of Lot 15, Appparently With One Or More Of The Shutt Children. Elizabeth Shutt, Later Mrs. James B. Dickey,
Owned Lot 15 Until May,1825, At Least. Mr. Edwin Lynch Recalls The Existence And The Site Of The Shutt Graves.<<

The above really establishes his place of residence, his vocation, his burial site, and the fact that he may have had other children who had died.

Do any of you have any Shutts who pursued a similar vocation of Hatter? Have you seen any reference to the vocation of hatter for any other Shutts? Any other Shutts in that part of NC in the early 1800's?

Henry's wife, Elizabeth, was born in Virginia in 1779, which I have documented. I just have not found the location of her birth, and her maiden name, although it may have been Sommerville/Somerville, as one of her granddaughters, Elizabeth Hazell, had Somerville as her middle name; special deed of gift of a slave girl to this granddaughter, many years before Eliza Shutt Dickey died.

I will be anxiously awaiting some response.

Best regards,

John Fox
