I'm sorry, I guess you misunderstood. I was looking for your information that Miss Totton's husband was named Joseph Marion Shumaker. Are you willing to share?

I meant to be clear in my original post. The parents I listed for Elizabeth were based on the assumption that since she always listed her nativity as Missouri and her year of birth as circa 1845, the 1850 census would be an excellent starting point. The Joseph Totton family, enumerated in Shelby County Missouri, was the "only" one that fit these requirement. I've been unable to find the many others that you have found.

In 1860 Elizabeth Totton, age 15, is located in Randolph County Missouri, Salt Springs Township, living next door to Russell's grand aunt Susan Shoemaker. Four houses down the road is the Wesley Shoemaker family. Russell is listed as R M Shoemaker, age 21 within his father's household. By 1870 Wesley has moved his family to Chariton County, Keytesville Township:

Wesley Shoemaker 60 Male North Carolina
Russell Shoemaker 31 Male Missouri
Welthy Shoemaker 29 Female "
Susan Shoemaker 20 Female "
Elizabeth Shoemaker 28 Female "
Sarah C Shoemaker 12 Female "
Joseph Shoemaker 10 Male "
William Shoemaker 5 Male "

Elizabeth, age 28, was not listed with this family in 1860 and is listed out of sequence, which usually indicates a separate family. I believe this must be Russell's wife and children. I've never located proof of their marriage and probably never will. But this is the "only" family living in Missouri that fits the requirements. You, of course, have the information from the 1870 census.

I've been researching the Shoemaker family that originates with John & Sarah Jerrett Shoemaker of Goochland County Virginia for 20 years and currently have accumulated over 3000 descendants with the Shoemaker/Shumaker/Showmaker/Shewmaker/Shumake/etc. surname and approximately the same number of female line descendants. Perhaps this isn't the positive match you're seeking but the logic and research is correct. Have you considered DNA testing, that might give you the certainty you're seeking.

Holler back if you have further questions.
