Hi Ron,
Check Ruth Shuler's messages to me in this thread. They were very helpful.
I looked it up and it appears that GA definately had Bastardy Bonds.I didn't realize what they were and lost an opportunity to look into it while in Union County. A post on RootsWeb.com describes Bastardy Bonds like this:"In an effort to 'protect' the community at large from being 'unduly burdened' with the expenses likely to be incurred for the care and feeding of children born 'without benefit of wedlock', unmarried mothers were required by the Courts to adhere by the laws at hand and submit to one of the following choices:
A. Name the Father of the Child.
B. Post a $300 bond.
C. Go to Jail.
D. Leave Town.
It was not unheard of for a 'bench warrant' to be issued for any woman failing her 'civic duty' in a timely manner," etc.
Clearly, the pressure was on to name the father. We might both get lucky. It seems like we need to find the Bastardy Bonds of Fannin and Union Counties, with Cherokee, Towns, and even White and Habersham being outside possibilities.
