Hey, Penney!Did you get your Shuler report done on time?
Wondering if anyone has come up with a lead for the lineage of George Shuler (b. abt 1782/84 d. 1864; wife Mary, large family, settled in Cheshire, Gallia Co., OHIO.
I've been looking and have found nothing yet.Wondering about possible links to Adam Shuler (immig. 1730 to Philadelphia), or Lorentz Shuler (abt. 1753 whose family went to upstate NY / Mohawk Valley). If anybody has tracked these lines down, I'd appreciate any info.
I've seen all the references to George Shuler children born in Rockbridge, VA.Looking up Virginia data for Augusta County, Rockbridge, Rockingham -- I turned up tempting bits but nothing conclusive.Example:
George Shuler found in:
Scotch-Irish Settlers in America, 1500s-1800s Immigration Records, Vol. II, Page number:240
Quote:
" Long and wife vs. Shuler -- O.S. 331; N.S. 119 -- Bill, 1820, by Paul Long and wife Elizabeth, that John Shuler of Rockingham died intestate leaving widow Mary, since married to Abraham Steep; children, viz: George, Sally, Eve, Catherine, oratrix, Mary, who married Henry Long and is now dead."
Unquote.
I've seen George Shuler's wife commonly listed as Mary, and occasionally as Mary Long.I don't know if or how the "Long" surname has been proven, but the evidence of a sizeable Long family in the Rockbridge, VA area certainly lends some strength to the possibility.(There is much more in the court records about the Long families, but virtually nothing about the Shulers. There was another George Shuler (son of John Shuler if I remember correctly)from this region of VA b. in the 1790's and I do not yet know if this is the George Shuler referenced in the court record cited above. It's interesting that, at least, a Henry Long apparently married a Mary Shuler!!!There is a Virginia marriage list that covers up to about 1799.There are many Longs on that list but no Shulers, so I'm guessing that the Mary Shuler - Henry Long marriage referenced above was after 1800.Also, I think this is possibly Henry Long III.
Another piece of info that I've seen posted is that George Shuler was born 1784 in Bucks, Pennsylvania.Would appreciate any source documentation for this.
Finally, has anybody actually seen documentation proving that George Shuler's children (most of them) were actually born in Rockbridge, VA?Starting to worry if we might have gotten some Shuler wires crossed because of the other Shulers there (ie John and George).
Thanks, George Kasten
(3rd GGS of George Shuler)
