That's part of my problem. I don't live in WV and I can't locate her in any online census records prior to the marriage. What I have is circumstancial. My Grandmother says Sarah E.'s maiden name was Shrout. In the 1870 census she, her husband and their first child William Smith are living next door to Hider, Mary, John, William and Rectina Shrout and a couple of houses from Sarah Shrout (42), William (20) and McClenen? (8) in the Moorefield township of Hardy County. The 42 year old Sarah is also buried in the Smith Cemetery. I suspect that she is somehow related to these Shrouts, but I cannot prove it yet. I've almost driven myself crazy trying to find her in the 1860 census with her parents, but haven't been able to. Any of these folks in your line?
