Alma,
I live in Florida, am aware of some graves in that North Cemetery but do not know how to get further info on them.
It is the spelling of the names that has made research on this line most difficult! George T. was illiterate to further complicate things and his name was spelled all different ways until he finally adopted the spelling on his Civil War Pension certificate which was SCHRODES.His death certificate was indexed at O.H.S. as SCHROOES, his obit as SHRODES and he was very difficult to find in the 1870 Census because the enumeration has the family as RHODES and then on the 1880 as SRODES.George's death cert. lists his father as John SCHRODES (born U.S.) and mother as Sarah (born U.S.).John and Sarah SHRODES I found on the 1850 Census living in Xenia.John was b. abt. 1811 in VA (so very close to your George W. who I have as b. abt. 1816 in VA).Robinson's History of Green County (pg 381) has John SRADE in Xenia by 1840 (married Sarah Cline on 30 Jun 1866 - so the right one).Same page has a David SRODES, Cedarville, died in 1860.This is the list of Pioneers from 1803-1840
George T. was born 10 June 1839 in Cedarville, OH.He married Ellen (FEASTER) BAKER, a widow of Samuel BAKER, on 01 May 1866 in Clark Co. (marriage record had his name as SNEAD!).Luckily I have his Civil War files from NARA and it contained a questionaire he completed about his birth, marriages, children, etc. that was the most helpful in tracking down these records.
So .... about all I have on John SHRODES is that he was born abt. 1811, b. VA (another researcher told me Berkeley Co., but I don't have a source for that) married in Greene Co, OH 30 June 1836 to Sarah CLINE and they had 3 children:Lemuel (probably died young), George T. and James W.James W. is buried in the North Cemetery (1841-1911).I imagine their parents may be buried there as well.George T. is buried in Ferncliff Cemetery. The children of James W. attended my great-grandmother's funeral (George T.'s daughter) in Springfield in 1956 so the families did stay in touch.
Didn't George W. SHROADES have a son named Jessie?Found him on the 1880 (under SHRODS....someone looked this up for me on the LDS 1880 Census CD, but I haven't looked it up in the actual record myself):

You mention that George W. had a son, David....am wondering if this is the one (also from the 1880 Census):

Am interested in the "bits of correspondence and journal entries" that you mentioned showing relatives visiting in Virigina. Can you post some of that?I am just convinced these SHROADES are related.
