By Linda M. Brien
Martin Schaub, a Swiss German, came to America in 1728, August 24th, on the ship, Mertonhaus.1 He resided in Pennsylvania for a while, then removed to Frederick County, Maryland, where he died in 1740.
He had a son Martin of whom there is record; also a daughter Catharine, who married Peter Kemp, according to the land records of Frederick County, Maryland, at Annapolis.2
Martin Jr. married Sophie Bott in Maryland, and his will, dated October 5, 1783, names his wife Sophie Bott in Maryland, and his will, dated October 5, 1783, names his wife Sophie Bott and nine children. The last two named in the will are not mentioned in the old Bible record written in German which is now in the possession of a descendant of the oldest son, George, who entered land in Greene County, Ohio, in 1804.3 The youngest chid, Samuel born 1771 according to the will, is to be taught in the English school and "[I] therefore direct that my executor send him to school so long at least until he arrive to the age of sixteen years."
The following is the record of the children of Martin Schaub, Jr., and wife Sophie Bott, translated from the German in the old Bible;
"In the year of our Lord Jesus Christ 1755, Feb. 12, I, Martin Schaub, and my wife, Sofie Bott, were blessed with a son and we gave him the name of George. His birth witnesses were when the Moon was in the Fish (Pisces) ad the Woman (Virgo) was in the Waterman (Aquarius)
"Again the Lord blessed us, in 1757, Feb. 15, with a little daughter and we gave her the name of Catharine. Her birth witnesses were when the Moon (Luna) was in the Bull (Taurus), the Woman (Virgo) in the Scale (Libra), and Venus in the Crawfish (Scorpio).
"In 1758, the 8th day of July, the Lord again blessed us with a little son and we gave him the name of Peter. His birth witnesses were the Lion (Leo) in the Moon (Luna) and Sun.
"In 1760, the 9th of March, we were blessed with a daughter and we named her Elizabeth. She died.
"In 1762, 2nd winter month, a son was born to us and we called him Christian. The Sun ran in the sign of the Scorpion.
"In 1765, the 12th of April, again a daughter was born and we gave her the name of Sophie. Her birth witnesses were the Moon in the Maiden, the Sun in the Lion, and Jupiter in the Crawfish.
"In 1767, the 13th day of April, a son was born and we named him Henry. When he was born the Moon was in the Twins (Gemini), the Sun in the Scale, Venus in the Crawfish, Jupiter in the Maiden, and Mars in the Lion.

588 - HISTORY OF GREENE COUNTY BEAVER CREEK TOWNSHIP BIOGRAPHICAL.
Benjamin F. Darst, the subject of this sketch, was born in Lost Creek Township, Miami County, Ohio, on the 16th day of December, 1838. His ancestors were German. His father, Rev. John Darst, an eminent minister of the German Baptist Church, was born in Franklin County, Virginia, January 1, 1790, came to Dayton, Ohio, in 1813, and settled in Miami County, Ohio, January 18, 1818, and died June 24,1875. His mother, whose maiden name was Mary Strasburg, after whose family name the city of Strasburg, in Germany, was named, was born in Frederick County, Maryland, and came, with her parents, to Ohio in 1818, and now resides near Troy, Miami County, Ohio. . Mr. Darst received a fair common school education ; then at the age of sixteen he entered 'the New Carlisle Academy for two winters, assisting on his father's farm during the summer. Taught school one winter, and then engaged in farming for his father. He was married on the 29th day of March, 1860, to Miss Rebecca Ann Shoup, whose father, Rev. Moses Shoup, of the German Baptist Church, was born in Frederick County, Maryland, on the 1st of October, 1793, and came with his parents, George and Charlotte Shoup, to Greene County, Ohio, in the spring of 1805. Her mother came with her parents to Montgomery County; Ohio, in 1804, and was joined in marriage to Mr. Shoup in 1818, and died January 11, 1877, having lived together almost sixty years. Mr. Darst removed to Greene County immediately after his marriage, and engaged in farming. He lived with and cared for his wife's parents, who were now in declining years, until their death, and still lives on the old Shoup homestead. The issue of his marriage was four children, three sons and one daughter: John Charles Darst, born May 18,1861; Moses Darst, born January 8, 1868: Lizzie Darst, born September 4, 1871, and Harry Darst, born April 2, 1877. In the year 1861, when the war broke out, Mr. Darst used his influence and means to encourage enlistment to fill the ranks of the Union army, and in the summer of 1863 joined Company D, Sixtieth Ohio Volunteer Militia, and was

elected and commissioned Second Lieutenant of his, company. In the year 1864, when Governor Brough made a call for one hundred days volunteers, he went with his regiment to Camp Dennison, on the 2d day of May, 1864, and was mustered into the United States service as Second Lieutenant of Company D, One Hundred and Fifty-Fourth Ohio National Guards, under command of Colonel Robert Stevenson; was transferred to New Creek Station, West Virginia, and from thence to Greenland Gap, and was engaged in scouting until July 28, when the regiment was ordered to fall back to New Creek and await the enemy under Johnson and McCausland, who attacked us about 2 o'clock P. M., August 4. The engagement was a warm one, and lasted until after dark. The Union forces, under command of Colonel Stevenson, acquitted themselves bravely, and during this engagement, Lieutenant Darst took an active part. He was always a favorite among his comrades, and his genial, pleasant disposition and social qualties, made him friends of them all. After returning from the service and being mustered out at Camp Dennison, September 1, 1864, his captain, H B. Gutherie, died, and Lieutenant Darst was unanimously chosen as captain of his company, which position he held until the war closed, and his regiment was disbanded. He was appointed notary public, is a surveyor and civil engineer. In the spring of 1865 he was elected township trustee for four consecutive years, until he declined serving any longer. He was also for many years a member of the board of education. In 1879 was elected real estate appraiser, and in spring of 1880 appraised all the real estate in Beaver Creek Township; was a delegate to the state conventions when Hon. John Brough and Hon. R. B. Hayes were nominated and subsequently elected governors of the state. In the spring of 1879 he and his estimable wife united with the German Baptist Church, at Zimmermanville, and he was elected to the ministry the following year, and in that capacity has served the church until the present time, being a faithful minister and a good counselor in all matters pertaining to the peculiarities of his fraternity. The residence and farm of Mr. Darst are two miles south of Shoups Station or Zimmermanville, on the road leading to Bellbrook, near Mount Zion Church.

Consider Martin Schaub may have been a member of the Mennonite Society. That probability stems from his use of the signs of the zodiac in listing dates of birth. Frederick S. Weiser, in an article in the Mennonite Family History for October 1982f, states that the Mennonites at this time of history always used the signs of the zodiac in recording birthdates. However, in a personal letter he states that ‘all Pennsylvania Germans used signs of the zodiac, not merely the Mennonites.'

and unborn child
Christian's daughter later died intestate and without issue most probably not yet of age. She may have died before her mother gave birth to the then unborn child because her mother named the newborn child Elizabeth also.
Land - Martin's Good Luck, resurveyed on 17 May 1790 for 218 acres and name changed to Shoup's Conclusion with 1 1/2 acre being a vacancy but he died before the patent was issued.
Christian's widow remarried to Peter SHUCK and they have wanted
to provide her second daughter Elizabeth with her share but have needed the cooperation of Christian's brother, George SHOUP, now living in Ohio, as the land descended to both brothers (George & Christian) from their father.

Francis A. Shoup Biography
Brigadier-General Francis A. Shoup was born at Laurel, Franklin county, Ind., March 22, 1834. He was appointed a cadet at West Point from Indiana, and was graduated in 1855 as brevet second lieutenant of artillery. He served in garrison at Key West and Fort Moultrie; was commissioned second lieutenant December 6, 1855, and served against the Seminoles in Florida, from 1856 to 1858. He resigned in 1860, and beginning the study of law was admitted to the bar at St. Augustine, Fla., early in 1861. In the war of 1861-65 he espoused heartily the cause of the South, and early in the struggle, under the order of the governor of Florida, he erected a battery at Fernandina. He was appointed a lieutenant of artillery in the Confederate army and was at first ordered to report to General Hardee in the Trans-Mississippi department. In October, 1861, he was commissioned major of artillery and was in command of a battalion of twelve guns with the Arkansas troops in Kentucky. General Hardee, in assuming command of the army of Central Kentucky, made him chief of artillery, in which capacity he served at the battle of Shiloh. He it was who massed the artillery against the position occupied by the command of Prentiss on the memorable first day at Shiloh, thus becoming an important factor in the capture of that fine body of Union troops. Under Beauregard he held the important post of inspector of artillery. He was sent with Hindman to Arkansas; was his chief of artillery, and as such participated in the battle of Prairie Grove. On September 12, 1862, he was promoted to brigadier-general; and in April, 1863, he was ordered to Mobile, Ala., as chief of artillery for General Buckner. At Vicksburg he commanded a Louisiana brigade and was captured upon the fall of that city. After being exchanged he served as chief of artillery to Joseph E. Johnston and gained the hearty commendation of his commander and the esteem of the soldiers. It was in a great measure due to his skillful management of the artillery that not a gun was lost in the several retreats of the army of Tennessee from Dalton to Atlanta in 1864. The works at the Chattahoochee, which Sherman declared were the best he had ever seen, were constructed under his supervision. Upon the removal of Johnston General Hood made Shoup his chief of staff. After the fall of Atlanta he was relieved at his own request. He was the author of a pamphlet urging the enlistment of negro troops, which was submitted to the Confederate congress. The year after the close of the war he was elected to the chair of applied mathematics in the university of Mississippi. Here he studied for the ministry and was admitted to orders in the Episcopal church, of which he had become a member while the Confederate army was in camp at Daiton, April, 1864. He officiated as rector at Waterford, N. Y., Nashville, Tenn., and New Orleans, La.; also filled the chair of metaphysics in the university of the South, at Sewanee, Tenn. He is the author of a work on ''Infantry Tactics"; while in Atlanta, in 1864, prepared a text-book on "Artillery Division Drill," and in 1874 he published the "Elements
