I too am a Shorter.. JoAnn Shorter, born into Shorter...
My Birth Name
My Father Name is Joseph Shorter he is the youngest of four siblings. They were born
(I presume) in Columbus Georgia, Muscogee county up in a place called (Upatoi.). Their names are in Birth order.
Magdalene Shorter-deceased 1996, Wesley Norman Shorter- deceased 1986
Willie James Shorter- deceased 1988 and my father Joseph Shorter- deceased 1988). Their father Name was Wesley Newton Shorter he was married to a Cherokee Indian woman name Authormae Stanback, I think she had about three sisters they too was from Upatoi. From my understanding and my research Wesley Newton Shorter had two other brothers Sam Shorter and a brother name Ira or Isley?? Our research shows that their father was a British man who came to the states (Savannah, Ga.) with his wife Annabel. This is all I know about that. Now my father’s father Wesley Newton Shorter left Georgia and Authormae Stanback (then Shorter) and went to Washington DC, and was never heard from again… Unfortunately, but there a story behind that as well. However, the offspring of these siblings were very small. Magdalene had only one child her name is Wanda Ruth she still lives in Columbus Ga... Willie James had only one son, his name is Willie James Shorter as well, he too still lives in Columbus Ga. Wesley Norman Shorter had four kids, one by his first marriage a girl call “Shugar” and two or three by his second marriage one or two of his children by his second marriage were taken by the state and adopted by a School teacher in “Phoenix Alabama. The “Shorter trail as I know it stops here …although I understand that Wesley Newton Shorter the father of the four siblings in Columbus Ga moved to Washington DC and its there he re married and he became some sort of Minister, Preacher or Mortician or something, but I have yet to find anybody related to this man. My father never saw his father again from the time he was 6 years old, the next time he saw him from my understanding my father himself was 26 year old .From what I have gathered and from my mother and others in Columbus,Ga., Wesley Newton Shorter died almost 15-20 year ago maybe??? Not to point out race but my grandfather is or was Mulatto...
I would sincerely appreciate it if you have feedback what so ever that you may be aware of regarding this name…This is an interesting name and I am truly and has been for several years , interested in tracing it back as far as I can to its beginning……….. Whatever it is!
