Joseph Shorey and Mary King of Plainfield, Vermont are ancestors of my husband, William Harvey through his mother, Mary Edith Shorey. Joseph & Mary were born in Canada, and the name was Charest. In the Plainfield, Vermont census records, I have found the name written as Shore and Shores. The 1860 census lists Joseph & Mary Shore
as parents of Alfred & siblings Nelson,Mary, and John. Nelson was born in Montreal in 1852 & died in Plainfield, VT. June 15,1909. We think Alfred was my husband's ancestor;he was known as Fred to the family. His death record is written as Fred A. Shore with no "s", but with father as Joseph Shores. The 1880 census lists Joseph and Mary Shorey with children Emma, Willie,Nathan,& Blanche in the household. The family lore cites Joseph's father as Modiste Charest of Canada. They trace his ancestry back to an illegitimate line of the son of Henry IV of France, the Duke of Orleans. His son was Count Hertelle de Rouville. A daughter of Rouville married Modiste Charest and they came from France to Canada. They say the records are with the Ursuline Convent of Three Rivers (Trois Rivieres) in Quebec, Canada. I have not seen those, and I see missing links here in the lineage dates. But from Joseph to the present, everything is documented. Joseph is buried in Montpelier Catholic Cemetery. Nelson and other Shoreys are in Plainfield Village Cemetery. After Joseph, they don't seem to be Catholics anymore.
