Isaac W. Shoop / Shupe, Corporal, 21st Virgina Cav
My gr grandfather's brother and several other Confederate cavarlymen of Bradley T. Johnson's Brigade were captured at the skirmish at Abram's Creek on the Berryville Pike, near Winchester, Va on 13 September 1864.
Issac W. Shoop (or Shupe), a corporal of the 21st Virginia Cavalry was among those captured. All the enlisted prisoners were taken to Camp Chase federal POW camp in Columbus, Ohio.
My gr grandfather's brother and Mr. Shoop both died while in captivity at Camp Chase and are buried in the camp cemetery.
Isaac W. Shoop is listed in the camp's registers as having died of small pox on 26 November 1864 and was buried in grave #519.
The problem is, the headstone on Mr. Shoop's grave is engraved "M. W. Roop" (another soldier in the 21st Va Cav was named Martin W. Root who survived the war and died in 1929; buried in Montgomery Co., Virginia).
I'm trying to make the case with the Dept of Veteran's Affairs (who are responsible for the Camp Chase cemetery) that the headstone on grave #519 should be replaced with one having Isaac Shoop's name.
I am not a relative so, I might need to find a descendant of Mr. Shoop who would be interested in standing up for him with the VA - the government will provide Confederate headstones at no cost and I believe the Hilltop Historical Society, who watch over the cemetery in Columbus might be pursuaded to have the new headstone installed.
Any descendant of Isaac W. Shoop -please let me know.
Thanks,
