Here is what I have on Solomon Shook ID: I3 Name: Solomon Shook Given Name: Solomon Surname: Shook Suffix: Sr. 1 Sex: M Birth: Abt 1763 in West Virginia 2 3 Note: Was supposedly born in West Virginia, cannot confirm this nor can his actual date of birth be confirmed. Death: 1827 4 Reference Number: 226 _UID: 2E0F57A4127F411B9756C5EACFEC39D78C2C Change Date: 13 Jan 2007 at 07:45 Note: «b»Solomon Shook Migration to Illinois Territory: «/b» There are records indicating that Solomon Shook, a son of Lawrence , visited the community of New Design in 1796, probably in the company of some other frontiersmen. He returned to Hardy County the same year, probably accompanied by the Rev. David Badgley, a pioneer Brethren minister and his brother Anthony Badgley. It was this group, headed by the Rev. Badgley, who organized a larger group, comprising women and children as well, among residents of Hardy County for a migration the next year to the New Design. Under the leadership of Rev. Badgley, who has the distinction of organizing the first Baptist church in the Illinois Territory, the Badgley Expedition was formed and left Hardy Co., for Illinois in 1797. Included in this group were two of Lawrence's sons. Soloman and Daniel Shook. (The Family of Cleveland Eldred Shook..2nd Edition Jan. 1996..H. Earl Close..Pg. 27) Solomon was supposedly born in WV in 1761, but we have not been able to locate a positive birth record. Family stories state that he married Hannah Valentine, but here again, we have found no record of his marriage. Hannah was the daughter of Ichabod Valentine. Her sister, Rhoda, married Rev. David Badgley who led the 1797 expedition to St.Clair Co., IL. Rev David Badgley established the 1st Baptist Church in the Illinois Territory. Solomon is mentioned as being one of the several frontiersmen from WV who visited the New Design area in the Illinois Territory about 1796 or 1797. His brother, Daniel, may have accompanied him on this trip. Soloman returned to WV and joined the Badgley Expedition on their migration westward to New Design in 1797. There are several references to Solomon in "The History of Randolph, Monroe and Perry Co. Illinois", published in 1883. On November 29, 1797, Solomon registered at Cahokia for 200 acres at Aigle Lake and 200 acres on Aigle Creed in Aigle Township in St. Clair County, the land having been purchased for William St. Clair on 26 May1797. On June 10, 1800, he is shown in Cahokia records as posting security on a bond in a civil case. It appears that Solomon used his "military rights" to acquire 400 acres of land (possibly the 400 acres mentioned above). These "military rights" have not been proven, might indicate military service by Solomon in one of the Indian conflicts, he would have been too young for service during the American Revolution. Solomon did own slaves, who were tactfully recorded as "indentured servants", as follows: Negro woman, Fanny, age 22, reg 24 May 1815, "-- said shook is to pay said Fanny $50 at the expiration of her term of service." Fanny's term of service was99 years! It is rather doubtful of Fanny ever collected her $50! Negro Man, Jesse, age 17, to serve 23 yrs, reg 19 Sep 1809 Negro Man, Dick, age 21, to serve 34 yrs, reg 17 Oct 1814 Negro boy, John age 5, to serve 25 yrs, reg 20 Aug 1810. On Sep 1811, Solomon was made Overseer of the Poor in l'Aigle Township, and on 8 June 1816, he was made Overseer of the Poor in Monroe County, Il.«tab» In 1816 he paid taxes in Monroe Co., on 3 slaves and a residence valued at $350 (Township 2 south, range 11 west, section 27). Evidently Solomon got himself embroiled in several civil actions and ended up paying one Hannah Hendricks $13.40 damages and court costs on 28Mar 1814, and the merchants Bryant & Morrison, $149.56, plus cost in a suit that lasted from 1800 to 1812. On 9 Aug 1814, he was given pre-emption right to the SW 1/4 of Sec 16,Twp 2S, R 11 W, on land he had improved prior to early 1813. In July 1817 he served on a Monroe county Grand Jury. He also signed several petitions with his father asking that they be granted clear title to their land. These requests were eventually granted and Solomon received grants from the US Government on Claim #620 for 200 acres, and#621 for 100 acres. He is also listed in the 1818 Census for Monroe County #125, with 3 males over age 21, and 5 others in his family, and 4 slaves. In the 1820 Federal Census of Monroe County, he is shown with 5 males over 21, and 4 others evidently a daughter got married between 1818 and 1820. Solomon died sometime between 1820 and 1830 because he is missing in the 1830 Census for Illinois. (The Family of Cleveland Eldred Shook...2nd Edition Jan. 1996...H. Earl Close...Pg. 39-40) Solomon is mentioned as being one of the several frontiers men from WV who visited the New Design area in the Illinois Territory about 1796 or 1797. Solomon returned to WV and joined the Badgley Expedition on their migration westward to New Design in 1797. There are several references to Solomon in "The History of Randolph.
