Shoff, Schopp, Shoap, etc., & etc
About eighteen years ago, my wife and I started this project but got diverted into writing another family book. Recently, we began again. Her ancestor in Mary Shoap who married Adam Shoemaker in Cumberland Co., PA in 1850.We have found that the Shoap family was in the 1790 census in Franklin County under Nicholas Stuff and in Cumberland County under a different spelling. Nicholas is recorded in the 1800 census in Franklin County as Nicholas Shoap. The family must have resided on or near the county line.Nicholas, of course, is Mary Shoap's grandfather. The name was also spelled 'Shope' at times.
Nicholas had four sons: Philip, John, William and George. He also had four daughters: Margaret, Mary Elizabeth and two others unknown as of yet.It seeems that the Nicholas was the only family member to use the 'Shoap' spelling. One other item that is very import, the family was of the Dunkard Religion which makes it very difficult to trace.
Using "FamilySearch", we found a Johannes SCHOPP of Tulpehockin Twp., Berks Co., PA who married Anna Barbara Hubler in October 1753.They had the following children all christened in the Host Reformed Church in Tulpehockin:Johann Nicholas in 1759, Catherine, abt 1768, Johann Jacob in 1770, Anna Maria in 1772 and, possibly, Johann Peter christened elsewhere in 1777.
In the next township lived a Jacob Schopp who arrived here ~1740.In searching the records, I beleive the John and Jacob were cousins from Ahrweiler, Germany (no proof).I also beleive that John's full name was Johannes Peter Schopp.Would anyone be interested in persuing this research with us including Jacob's family. For others - Jacob had a son Johannes Jacob Schopp christened Jan 21, 1750.
