Re: U.S. Senator Benjamin Franklin Shively

In Reply to: U.S. Senator Benjamin Franklin Shively by Steven W. Winegardner of 1159

From the SHIVELY NEWSLETTER dated Feb. 1995, page 1 submitted by Louis F. Shively. Senator Shively was a descendant of Christian and Barbara Spittler Shively of Oberdorf, he was descended from Uhli, 1722-?, Christian Sr. 1744-1834, Jacob 1767- ca.1839, Jacob Jr. 1803-1869. B.F. was the son of a Bretheren Minister, the Rev. Joel Shively and Elizabeth Penrod. He was the grandson of another Breteren Minister, the Rev. George Shively who came from Virginia to Stark County, Ohio. The Senator's tie to the Union County Shivelys would be in that they share the common ancestor of Christian and Barbara Spittler (Spithaler). Various issues of the Newsletter have treatments of Senator B.F.Shively's ancestors and descendants as well as the Union County Shivelys. For the Union County Shively's, Arthur Black's book is still an excellent source and Judith Wagner updated it with her book.
