Are you sure the Ishams died in Putnam Co.? I believe they died in Stewart Co., GA. An Isham Shirling "far advanced in years" had a will dated 11 Jan 1837 and proved 19 Jan 1837 in Stewart Co. He names sons William B. and John Anderson Shirling, son-in-law James Webb and daughters Mary Givens and Patience Harris. How do you know he had a son Isham?
I believe this branch of Shirlings came from Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina. I found a TON of references to Isham Sherling (Sen. and Jr?) in "Mecklenburg Co., NC deed abstracts", by Ferguson, call F262.M4 F48 at Sutro Library in San Francisco... (deed books 15-23)
Of note #5002, Isom Sherling Sr. of Georgia, 21 May 1823 sells to Robert Wal?
Earliest reference is: #1036 (Book 16, p. 532) 28 April 1796, Thomas Pair & Darcus his wife to Isham Shirling for L100..
recorded Mar 1801. (Thomas Pair sells to John Sherling 31 Dec 1798 reg. 10 Mar 1801 16:527)
#3293 Isom Sherling and wife Mary, to Jesse Ivey, Feb 1811.. (19:225)
#1061 Isom Sherling and wife Sarah, 22 Feb 1801, 60 A on Waxhaw Cr.. (16:562)
#4263 William and wife Candis Sherling to Isam Sherling, 105A on Waxhaw Cr.. 5 Feb 1819 (21:101)
In 1850, Stewart Co., GA, there is a Candis R. Sherlin, 48 and in that household is a Richard Sherlin, 88, b. in Virginia. In the 1850 Mortality Schedules, Wm Sherlin, 54, b. South Carolina d. in Mar. 1850 (Stewart Co.). So, possibly the Shirlings were in SC (Mecklenburg bordered York Co., SC) prior to 1796 when William was born and well before that, if Richard, 88, was related to Isham (could be the same Richard mentioned elsewhere on this board under the "Indian Claim"), then perhaps they did come from Virginia.
Unfortunately, I don't know which Isham was which in the deed books ref'd above.
That's about all I know.. if you have any info on Isham's daughter who m. James Webb (my direct ancestor), I'd appreciate it.. I don't know her name!
