I have some information gathered from letters written 20 or so years ago.
A family descending from Richard Shirkey or Chortie lived in St Clair Co. He had a son Elmer (born 6 Dec 1901) whose wife was Pauline Ducharme.
Another line from around Anchorville was descended from Nora Shirkey b. 1863 daughter of John Shirkey.
Another line descends from Dosie Shirkey b. 1888 and lived in St. Clair.
Yet another descends from Charles Shurkey of St. Clair. His son says Charles was one of 17 children.
In the 1850 MI Census there are many various spellings form Chartier and Chortier to Shirkey, Sherky and Sharky.
I would be glad to pass on the names of those who sent letters and look deeper into those letters if you have an idea one of these may help.
I descend from an entirely different line from VA but some of this information may help you.
