I have a descendency of this family and am in contact with some of their descendants. Some live near me in North Canton, Ohio still using the Scheurer spelling. The Scheurers in Iowa lived very near some descendants of my line who were also using the Shirer spelling by then and supposedly your line adopted the spelling from mine.

Our families may be connected back in Europe but mine came to America about 1740 while yours came about 1843 settling first in New York. There are lots of Scheurers still in Switzerland, Germany and the Alsace and other parts of Europe who can trace their history back to Switzerland which many of them fled during the Thrity Year War seeing how they were Lutherans and Reformed.
