I have read the 2000 and 2001 postings regarding Shirah Cemetery in Barbour County, AL. I am related to those Shirahs and Gordon Hubbard (my uncle) and my father (LaJoie Roberts) researched this family tree and put the information into book form, a copy of which I have. My problem is as follows:

In researching my Childers ancestors in Barbour County, I came across a census record for 1870 that shows a Piety Childers living with a Jefferson Childers. Jefferson is my great grandfather and is also known as John Jefferson or J.J. Childers in various records. I have been able to determine that Piety Childers was the daughter of Silas K. Shirah and lived in his home in 1860. My family has often wondered whether John Jefferson was married prior to his marriage to Eliza Jane Turner because he was around 40 at the time they married. John Jefferson and Eliza are married and living together in the 1880 census and I can find no further information on Piety. I don't know whether she died or maybe they divorced. I also realize there is a possibility Piety never married Jefferson but lived with him and took his name. Does anyone have any information that might help my search? Any help you can give me will be appreciated.

Linda
