Hi, Cynthia. One thing I learned from reading this forum and searching the net for info on my Shirah family is that there are at least two origins for the name. One is Hebrew, a name meaning "Song," as I saw posted on this forum, while the other is German. I think I ran across an Arabic surname, as well.

I don't know whether there is a Scottish origin.

My Shirah ancestors were German, having immigrated to the U.S. (South Carolina) in the 1780s from Sax-Gothe, northern Germany, where it had been spelled "Schieres."

Most German Shirahs eventually settled in Georgia and southern Alabama, where my family is from.

I hope this helps. Best of luck in your search.

Son of Joy Shirah and Frank Douglas Grimmett
