Sorry, there is no definitive, proven ancestry for Nancy HANKS, mother of Abraham LINCOLN. The best source for information about a Shipley connection is "Shipley Ancestry of Lincoln's Mother," by Louis A. WARREN, Indiana Magazine of History, Sept. 1933, 29:3. WARREN quotes Caroline Hanks Hitchcock's Nancy HANKS: the Story of Abraham Lincoln's Mother (New York, 1900) but indicates that there are some errors. Adin BABER wrote Hanks Family Historical Series, III, Nancy Hanks, Destined Mother of a President, the Factual Story of a Pioneer Family as Revealed in an Exhaustive Study of Ancestral History (privately printed by the author, Kansas, IL, 1963). ____ Ancestry of American Presidents, by Gary Boyd ROBERTS (New England Historic & Geneal. Soc., Boston, 1989). Abraham LINCOLN was son of Nancy HANKS & Thomas LINCOLN. Parents of Nancy HANKS (5 Feb. 1784, Campbell Co., VA - 5 Oct. 1818, near Gentryville, Spencer Co., IN) as given by Louis WARREN & Ralph PEARSON: James HANKS of North Carolina & Lucy SHIPLEY, who m2. 3 Apr. 1791, KY, Henry SPARROW. as given by Adin BABER: Abraham HANKS & Sarah HARPER. as given by R. M. BELL: __ HANKS & __BERRY. I believe that the problem is that the families were on the frontier, where records were not made or preserved very well. Notify Administrator about this message?
