Hi Linda:
I research the Irish Family History Foundation's database. It contains 12,800,000 surviving rcds for abt 70% of Irish counties. Rcds are increasingly sparse B4 1840, rare B4 1800. Cos. Donegal and Derry were recently added to the database.
Note 1 - Without a KNOWN county, the chance of an ancestor's rcds NOT being in this database is AT LEAST 30%.
Note 2 - Only 1/2 of Co. Cork's rcds are in this database.
Note 3 - The RC church kept control over most parish rcds from Tipperary (north). These are ONLY available thru the Tipperary Family History Research center at a substantial fee (regardless of outcome).
Note 4 - Microfilms of parish church rcds are kept by the National Library of Ireland.
For James Shine B 1851 +/- 4 yrs, Newmarket, Co. Cork, with a father forenamed Pat(rick), I found 0 rcds. Broadening the search to all of Co. Cork (in the database), I got the same result.
For Tim(othy) Shine B 1843 ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1842.
For Den(is) Shine B 1840 ditto, I found 1 rcd, also in 1842 (twins?).
For Jer(emiah) B 1836 ditto, I found 1 rcd in 1838.
For possible Shine siblings B 1836-1853, Newmarket, Co. Cork, I found 2-John B 1836, James 1840, Johanna 1844, Mary (1838, 1840), Margaret 1842, Daniel 1845, Humphrey 1846, Hannah 1853, Honora 1853, and Patrick (1838, 1840). It is obvious there were at least two Shine families headed by a father named Patrick in Newmarket during this era.
For Joha(nnah Mahoney M 1834 +/- 4 yrs, Newmarket, Co. Cork, I found 1 rcd in 1836.
For Pat(rick) Shine M ditto, I found ditto. These are highly likely to be for these ancestors. A view of the detailed rcds should show they married each other. If so, the view MAY reveal their parents' names as well as other info. These facts will help you identify and verify earlier B/M rcds and generations.
For Joha(nnah) Mahoney B 1815 +/- 4 yrs, Co. Cork, with the father's forename unknown (or found above), I found 24 rcds - too many to easily summarize here. None were in Newmarket. Four were in Clondrohid, and one in Shandrum RC parishes.
For Pat(rick) Shine B 1813 ditto, I found 2 rcds: 1811 Clondrohid, and 1817 Shandrum RC parishes. Father's respective forenames were James and Daniel.
Google the Foundation's name to lead you to this database. Register, opt to be notified as rcds are added and browse. Pls post your search results to my genforum msg.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
