My husband's grandfather was born Frank Winfield SHIER in 1873 at Sandusky Co., OH. His father was Philip SHIER born 1843, supposedly at Buffalo, NY. Frank changed the spelling of his name to "Shire" for reasons unknown. I have been unable to find anything on the parents or siblings of Philip SHIER. The name "Winfield" seems quite a coincidence.
