Kelley, I don't believe I ever contacted you about the more recent information I've found on the Shire family.
It turns out the original name was/is "Scheurer." Phillip Scheurer/Scheur/Shier was a son of Peter Scheurer and his wife Caroline, whose last name is still unknown. I don't have my records with me right now but at home I have a lot of information on the family.
After Lydia Myers Shier (sic) died, Phillip married Caroline Kettinger of Monroe County, Michigan. They had a son, Edward Julius Scheurer, born 26 July 1886 at Old Fort, Ohio. When Phillip died, Carrie took her infant son with her back to Michigan where she married a man named William Dittus. William and Caroline Dittus and Edward "Scherer" can be found in the 1900 census of Bayfield, Michigan. By 1910 William Dittus had adopted Edward and thereafter Edward was known as Edward Julius Dittus.
Edward and his parents moved to Denver, Colorado where Edward graduated from the Colorado School of Mines as a metallurgical engineer. He married Caroline Wolf on 6 September 1911. He died of the Spanish influenza in 1918, leaving a 2-year-old daughter (also named Carolyn) and a pregnant widow, who later gave birth to a son, Edward Joseph Dittus, in 1919. He was known as "Joe."
First Lieutenant Joe Dittus was killed on 5 May 1945 in an air crash -- he was a pilot during the war. It is not known if he had ever married and ever had children, but probably not.
Daughter Carolyn Dittus married a Mr. Barnes. No further information except that she died in 1962. Most of the Dittus family are buried in the Fairmount Cemetery in Denver, Colorado. There are supposedly two surviving granddchildren of Edward J. Scheurer/Dittus and his wife Carolyn, but I haven't found anything about them. They were probably surnamed "Barnes."
There are too many persons named Caroline or Carolyn in this family to suit me. It must have been an incredibly popular name at the time.
