Hi!

I am a JACKS researcher and new to the SHIER forum. I am going to put out all I have and hope someone can connect with the Shier family that my Sarah belonged to.

Also: Who is Mary Ida SHIER? Who is Mercy Torrent McGinnis?

Sarah SHIER
AKA: (possibly) Sarah Louise SHIER
Female
Born: about 1842 in IRELAND (from 1880 census)
Died: after 17 Jul 1883 (birth of last child) and before 25 Jan 1892 (marriage of Christopher C. JACKS to second wife) in Muskegon City, Muskegon Co., Michigan
Note: 1890 census unavailable

Father Unknown SHIER born: ENGLAND (from 1880 census)
Mother: UNKNOWN born: IRELAND (from 1880 census)

Spouse: Christopher Columbus JACKS born: 1837 in Wilkesville, Gallia Co. (now Vinton), OH; died: 24 Sep 1907 in Muskegon City, Muskegon Co., Michigan; son of Solomon JACKS [born: 15 Jan 1811 in (probably) NC; died: 20 Sep. 1877 in Centerville (near Athena), Umatilla Co., OR] and Levina MACOMBER [born: 11 Nov 1813 in Gallia Co. (now Vinton), Ohio; died: after Mar 1852 in (probably) Chillicothe, Ross Co., OH (may have died in childbirth); daughter of Alexander W. Macomber and Esther M. Anderson]

Married: about 1857 in (probably) Illinois, or (possibly) Iowa
Note: The JACKS family was in Pilot Grove, Hancock Co., IL in 1860. However, Christopher may have joined his uncle John A. Macomber in Iowa (around Des Moines) in the mid-1850's. It is said that he left home at about age 17 or 18 (about 1854-55), after the death of his mother and remarriage of his father, and probably the move to Hancock, IL, and explored North in Nauvoo, Hancock, Co., IL (after the Mormons left), Wisconsin and Michigan. He later ends up in Michigan.

NOTE: Where did Christopher C. JACKS meet and marry Sarah SHIER?

NOTE: Christopher married Sarah Shier about 1857 in Illinois or Iowa. Christopher would have been about 20 years old and Sarah about 15 or 16. Their first child George was also born in Illinois (1880 census says Iowa), about 1858. Between 1858 and 1860 they moved to West St. Paul, Dakota, Minnesota. Son Frederick was born about 1861 in St. Paul, Dakota Co., Minnesota where Christopher enlisted on 30 Apr 1862. I believe he took Sarah and sons George and Frederick to Iowa, or they moved to Iowa after his “desertion” in Jan of 1863.

Census:
1860 West St. Paul, Dakota, Minnesota
Columbus Jack [Christopher Columbus Jacks] Male, 24, born about 1836, born OH
Sarah Jack, [Sarah Shier] Female, 18, born about 1842, born Ireland
George Jack, [George H. Jacks] male, 2, born about 1858, born Illinois [1880 says Iowa]
John Hanly, male, 21

1862 – Christopher C. Jacks enlisted in Company I of the 5th Minnesota Voluntary Infantry Regiment (Union) as a private; he was mustered 30 Apr 1862.
From Frank O. Jacks, “Biography of Benjamin Franklin Jacks”: “Christopher C. Jacks enlisted in Company I Second Illinois Cavalry.” (See above)
1863 – Christopher C. Jacks “deserted” on 28 Jan 1863 from Jackson, Mississippi.

Name: Jacks, Christopher C.
Regiment: 5th Minnesota Infantry
Company I
Side: Union
Rank in: Private
Rank out: Private
Film Number: M546 roll 5

“COMPANY I, MUSTERED APRIL 30, 1862….Christopher C. Jacks, destd, Jan. 28, '63, at Jackson, Miss.”
Note: Although we do not know why Christopher C. Jacks left his regiment, we do know that it was after his company commander had resigned and they had been through the battle of Corinth and were moved to Mississippi and attached to a different regiment. After Christopher left, “Company I” was engaged at Vicksburg, Mississippi. I assume he traveled by rail or up the Mississippi River to get home. We know he and his family were in Iowa in 1864.

With the above information we can assume that Christopher C. Jacks left his young wife, Sarah and two young children, George, born in Illinois (or Iowa), age 4, and Frederick, born in Minnesota, age 1, and enlisted as a Union soldier. Part of his Regiment was left to fight the Indians in Minnesota, but his Company was sent to fight on the southern front. While he was enlisted, his extended family moved to Iowa. We do not know if Sarah and the children went to Illinois to join the family in 1862, or if she and the children came to Iowa with Christopher when he returned. We do know that after Christopher returned in 1863, their third child Franklin is born in Iowa about 1864. I have some information that indicates that the extended family had moved to Iowa before the time that John enlisted in January of 1864 because unlike his older brothers who enlist in Illinois, he enlists in the Fourth Iowa Cavalry, Company I. Isaac, the youngest, enlisted in October of 1864 in Iowa. So it is possible that Solomon’s family and Christopher’s family moved to Iowa together. We could speculate that Christopher sent Sarah and the children to his family in Illinois when he realized he would no longer be in Minnesota, meaning their time in Minnesota was relatively brief.

Note: There is a gap of 4 years between when Franklin is born in Iowa in 1864 and when Lulu is born in Michigan in 1868.

1868 and 1870 – Muskegon City, Muskegon Co., MI
Note: Although we know that Lulu was born in Michigan about 1868 (1880 census records), I have been unable to find any census records for Christopher and family in the 1870 census. This may simply be due to lack of census information. However, we know that they were in Muskegon, Michigan continuously from 1868 due to the St. Paul Church birth records of “Alexrina” [this is a mis-transcription of Florence] Jacks (Florence in 1880 census), female, born: 19 Oct 1870; Cora Columbia Jacks, female, born: 16 Oct 1872; and Harry Shier Jacks, male, born 22 Mar 1874.

Note: All records after 1868 of Christopher C. Jacks and his family are from Muskegon City, Muskegon Co., Michigan.
