I am on the trail of my husband's ancestor, Philip Scheuer, who changed the spelling of his name to Shier. In our family the name has become "Shire." The known facts are that he was born in 1843 in Buffalo, Erie County, New York and that he died in 1887 in Seneca County, Ohio. Using the census records, I have found a Philip SCHEUER age 7 living in the household of Frederick (22) and Margaret (29) CLOSE in Amherst, Erie County, NY in the 1850 census, along with a sister Margaret Scheuer, age 8. Both children born NY. Frederick and Margaret CLOSE were born in Germany. In 1860 I found living in Liberty, Bettsville PO, Seneca County, OH the family of Richard (34) and Margaret MILLER (39), both born Germany, with children Philip 16, Frederick 9, Rosana 6, Richard 4, William 3, and George 1 -- all born in NY. Was this Philip really Philip SCHEUER? Was Frederick really Frederick CLOSE? In 1870 Ballville, Sandusky County, OH (this town/county is adjacent to Seneca County) I found the family of Richard Miller (43) and Margrat (sic) Miller (47), both born Baden, with children Richard 14, George 11, and Fredrick CLOSE, 19. All children born in NY. By 1880 the Miller and Close families seem to have moved to LaSalle, Monroe County, Michigan. Frederic CLOSE was in that census with wife Mary and daughters Margaret and Susan, and sister-in-law Sarah CLINE. Nearby was the family of Richard Miller, 52, born in Baden. with wife Anna 34 and son George age 21 born NY. Mary and Sarah Cline were from Seneca County, Ohio. There was another SCHEUER family (that of Adam and Caroline Scheuer) who emigrated from Seneca County, Ohio to LaSalle, Monroe County, MIchigan. I speculate that Adam was an uncle to my Philip Shier/Scheuer. My theory is that Margaret, surname unknown, was first married to a ? Scheuer (possibly Peter Scheuer) by whom she had two children, Margaret and Philip. All in Buffalo, NY. I think she may then have married one Fredrick CLOSE and that they had a child, also named Frederick, born about 1851. Frederick Close must have died (?) and then Margaret was married again to Richard Miller and moved to Seneca County, Ohio. She may have died before 1880; Richard Miller is found in LaSalle, Monroe County, Michigan, with a young wife, Anna. I'm sorry for this long message, but anyone researching the Shier/Scheuer/etc. surname might be interested. Nancy Shire Indianapolis, IN Notify Administrator about this message?
