Hello there:
I am in the process of trying to put together my Mother's Family Tree. My Mother's name was Harriett Phoebe Effie Shier. Through her life she was referred to as "Hattie" and her nickname was Doreen. She was born March 6, 1909 in Thorah Twp. Ontario, and passed away December 17th, 1977 in Toronto, Ontario. Her Father was Adam Wesley Shier born 1855-56 in Ontario and passed away in 1925-26 in Western Canada where he had farmed in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Her Mother was Christina Ferguson. Adam Wesley Shier is buried in Cedarvale Cemetery, along with his first wife, who died in childbirth, and his second wife, being my Grandmother Christina Ferguson who died in 1918-19 in Winnipeg Manitoba. They had three sons Ellsworth R. Shier of Thunder Bay, Ferguson V. Shier of Toronto, and Herbert Adam Shier of Thunder Bay, Ontario. They only had one daughter being Harriett Phoebe Shier of Toronto who was my Mother. My Mother married George Kenneth Rumble in December of 1941 in Toronto. I also have a brother, Peter Kenneth Rumble born March 6, 1943 and passed away June 20, 2007.
Adam Wesley Shier had a previous family with his first wife, and they had children, being Lorne, Maude, Ernie etc. There is information that I do have, but alot that I do not have.
My Mother always talked about the large monument at Cedarvale Cemetery for the original Grandfather Shier who immigrated to Canada. I do not know whether he is my Great Grandfather, or Great Great. All of the Shiers are related, and apparently have a very large family reunion every year or so, in Ontario. The majority of the original family in Ontario are buried at Cedarvale Cemetery in Cannington, Ontario.
Apparently, the name Shier had been changed along the line, and had many spellings Shierer, Scherer, schier and many more. They apparently originated in Spier Germany, and also in the Alsace Loraine (not sure of spelling) then immigrated to Limerick Ireland. From Ireland they immigrated to Canada and the U.S. I do have a family portrait of Adam Wesley Shier with all his brothers and sisters, along with his Father and Mother, I AM SURE THAT SAMUEL SHIER IS RELATED TO MY GRANDFATHER, AND I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW HOW CLOSE. THANKING YOU FOR ANY INFORMATION.
