A Shirey Surname Project has been started at FamilyTreeDNA. Participation from the Shier family is welcomed and encouraged.
To join the project, go to http://FamilyTreeDNA.com and under "Search" and to the right of "Equals" enter Shirey. When you see the list of members, click on the surname "Shirey" under "Project". You will see instructions on how to join.
Since the tests use yDNA, participants must be males who want to check their direct paternal line - in this case, male Shirey's, Shire's, Shier's, etc.
There is a cost for testing (~$150). The test kits are mailed to your home where you take a sample from inside your cheek (the sensation of using the scraper is like brushing your inside cheek with your toothbrush). You then mail the sample in for analysis. Privacy is ensured by the testers.
I believe this will be the most effective way to eliminate gaps in our family tree due to missing documentation.
