Hi Betsy sorry I just saw your message. Your last name probably was originally Scheuer/Schyer. You may be descended from Hans (John) Scheurer/Schyer who went to Ireland from The Palatine district in Germany to escape religious persecustion. However this is just one branch of the family and others may have gone to America drirectly from England.
