First, a correction."Geddock Betts" is actually "Zadock Byrd Betts", who was born in 1811 or 1812.Other census records and a cemetery marker bear this correction out.(His grave marker in the Winder city cemetery reads "Z. Byrd Betts", according to a post entitled ""Re: Zaza Byrd Betts," by Claudia Scarbrough, posted to the Betts forum on May 1, 2002 .)
Census records both before and after the 1860 census (the one I quoted in my previous post) list his name variously as "Zadock B." (1840), "Zedick K." (1850), "Zeddock" in 1860 (yes, the handwriting is THAT bad!), "Z.B." (1870), and "Zadock" (1880).The only "Zadock" I've heard of is "Zadok the Priest" from the Old Testament, and since Zadock Byrd Betts is the son of a Methodist preacher (Johnathan Betts), and his brother Reddick Betts was also a Methodist preacher, I believe that it is fair to assume that his actual name was "Zadock Byrd Betts".
Anyway, he married Elizabeth A. [Shields] Cummin[g]s sometime between Sept 16, 1850 (because the 1850 census, taken that date, shows Z.B. still married to his first wife, Nancy A. Betts), and July 24, 1860,because a child, "Nancy", obviously named after her (deceased?) mother, was born in late 1853 or early 1854.It is very possible that mother Nancy died giving birth to baby Nancy.I suspect that the youngest child in the 1860 census "Harriet", whose age is given as "7/12" (IOW, a seven-month old baby), is the offspring of Z.B. and Elizabeth Betts.
FIRST GENERATION
Zadock Byrd Betts had the following children by his first wife, Nancy A. Betts (b. 1812/13); (years of birth are based on the 1850 and 1860 Jackson Co., GA, census):
Mary F., b. 1835
Lovick P., b. 1838
Eleanor J., b. 1840
Redick H., b. 1843
Jonathan B., b. 1847
Zeadick W., b. 1849 (listed in 1860 census as "idiot").
Nancy, b. 1854
(The last child could have been by his second wife.)
Z.B. Betts married 2nd, Elizabeth A. [Shields] Cummin[g]s
They had at least one child:
Harriet, b. between Dec. 24, 1859-Jan 24, 1860.
Elizabeth A. Cummings had two children from her first marriage to Joshua Cummings:
Sarah J. Cummings (my direct ancestor), who later married Robert B. Cox of Winder, GA.
James J. Cummings
It appears that James J. Cummings did reach adulthood, since he appears in the 1870 Jackson Co. GA census as "Jas J Cummings," age 20, and living in Jefferson, GA.His age in1870 census, combined with his father's death in Mar 1850, fixes his year of birth as being in late 1850.The 1860 census is apparently wrong when it gives his age as 8 in that year.He had to be late nine or ten.
I am very interested in your comments regarding the "relative" of Joshua Cummings who wrote him from Walker County, GA.Do you have the name or a citation for the correspondence?I am not far from Walker County. Also, if the correspondences between Joshua Cummings and Joseph Shields are extant, could I get a citation for them?
If you're interested, I can give you descents for Sarah J. Cummings and Robert B. Cox.Sarah is my gg-grandmother.
Looking forward to your reply!
Steve Bird
Thanks in advance
