Check out info on the Ten Brothers who settled at Shields Fort on the Nolichucky River, I believe...They were descendants of Robert Shields and Nancy Stockton of Augusta Co, VA, married in 1761.Among their children were a John Shields, b. 1769.John, or any one of his brothers, could have been the father of your John Shields. There is a lot of information available on this group of Shields. The ten brothers were:
Thomas, b. 1763
Richard, b 1764
David, b 1766
William b 1768
John b 1769
James b 1771
Robert b 1772
Joseph b 1775
Benjamin b 1780
They also had one sister, Janet Shields Tipton, older than all of them... born 3/7/1762
I know that at least 5 of Benjamin's children were born in Sevier County, TN, but they were all born after 1800.I have visited cemeteries in the Cades Cove area of the Smokies that were full of people named Shields (mostly after 1830's, however). There is also a Shields Mountain just NE of Gatlinburg.Check Knox County, TN records for many Shields who may be your ancestors / kin ...
