Leonard Claiborne Shewmaker, Judge, was born on 19 May 1757 in Goochland County VA. He was the son of Evan Shewmaker and Sarah Claiborne. His father was said to have been a fur-trader of Welsh descent. Leonard served in the Rev War from Augusta County Va and later went on an expedition to Kaskaskia and the Northwest (now IL) Territory. On 7 Apr 1787 he married Eunice Ritchie born in 1770. The Couple lived in Botetourt County for four years before going to East TN and settling near Duck River. However, by 1797 the family had moved to Knox County KY and remained for several years. Here, Leonard acquired 500 acres of land on the waters of the Cumberland River and Flat Creek.
In 1814, the Shewmakers came to Jackson Coutny, Indiana and first settled at Brownstown. Nine years later, a move was made to "the forks" in Driftwood Township. On 6 May, 1816, Leonard was appointed overseer of the Poor in Flinn Township. He was elected Associate Judge of the County and served from 1817 to 1824. About 1833, the family settled near Medora where Leonard died on 30 Oct 1839, over 80 years of age. Some of their descendants changed the spelling of the name to Shoemaker.

Inspector of said twp. 1816 Road Surveyor. Became Justive of the Peace 1828. d 4 Oct 1842. Ch: Eunice 12 Dec 1809, Mary Claiborne 21 Oct 1811, William Logan 8 Jul 1813 m. Mary Stockdell, Leonard Claiborne 9 Sep 1815, George Washington b 3 Jun 1817 m)Elizabeth Cox dau of Solomon Cox and Ann (Comer) Cox, Sarah 7 Mar 1819 m. Abner Cox (brother of Elizabeth Cox and son of Solomon and Ann (Comer) Cox, and last Nancy 27 Feb 1822.
3. Nancy Shewmaker 10 Apr 1791 TN m (1) 24 Jul 1806 John Alsup Jr. m (2) 21 Aug 1831 Isaac Harrell. d. 13 Aug 1854 near Medora, IN. Ch; Daniel, Leonard Claiborne 1812, Jesse 1814, Thomas, James, Richard, Isaac 1832/3, Josiah 1834/5.
