Hey Cousin Judy,
I was wondering if you were OK. I had a little computer trouble myself, I crashed it installing my wifes embroidery machine software. We went over yesterday and found where Boston's land was in Izard Co. It is by a little crossroads called Bonetown, just east of Sage. We went to the 4 closest cemeteries, and didn't find him. There are so many graves only marked with a native stone. I haven't had any luck finding transcriptions yet, but I am still looking. We did find Willis Battles though. He is in the Antioch cemetery, which is very close to the land patents for Boston Shew and Francis Battles. I think he was Francis'son. There was also a J.E. Battles in the Finley Creek cemetery, which is the closest one to Boston's land. It was a very interesting trip, the countryside is beautiful over there, I would like to have seen it in 1860. I spoke again with James Shew's grandaughter, Mrs. King, and went to see her brother, Ralph, who lives very close to me. Another coincidence, my wife used to live across the street from him. They were so helpful, had a lot of information, and still a lot of questions. They believe that James' father John was killed in the civil war, and there is a John from Al. on the roster of confederate Soldiers in the 22nd Inf. Co. D. John's widow Mary came to Ar. married to Berry Combs, with James Lewis, Frances Louise, and thier stepbrother named John V. Johnson, so she may have been married between John and Berry. James married Elmira Coker and they had 6 children, George, Arney, James Thomas, Sarah (Sadie), James Arley, Rush Floyd. After Elmira died in 1900 James married Susan Dew, and they had 2 more children, Elva and Eugene. Rush, and James Thomas, along with Sadies daughter, Tessie Billings were the ones that drowned in the White River in 1925. Did you get the link I sent you to that story? Francis Louise never married, she and John V. Johnson had a farm next to James'.I have found all of thier graves at three different cemeteries, they all were moved when they built Bull Shoals Lake. One other puzzle, Ralph had a letter to James from Boston Sarratt (Sarrett?) in which he called him cousin. He is listed in the 1880 James Creek Township census as b. 1841 in Al. He is buried in Witts Springs Cemetery. Have you ever heard that name?
Oh yeah, my dad told me that Grover's brothers and sisters names were Dan, Will, Hub, Al, and Mattie. That shouldmatch up to Gilfords children. Well, I don't know if this forum can hold much more for now. I lost your E-mail when I crashed so if you want to E-mail me again I would appreciate it.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Johnny.
