Thomas "Tom" Sherwin
SHERWIN, THOMAS (TOM) Tom Sherwin, 88, passed away at home June 30th from complications of lung cancer. He grew up in Lincoln and Boston, MA, attended Belmont Hill School and Harvard (class of '37). During WWII he served as a navigator in the Aviation Cadets, flying 44 missions over Italy. In 1947, he married Lillian Badtram, and then joined the Overseas Division of Proctor and Gamble, working in Surabaya, Java and Paris. In 1957 he returned to the US with his wife and new daughter, Emily, to serve as Comptroller and Commodities Trader for the Buckeye Division of Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati. He retired in 1981. Tom and Lillian moved to Casa de Maana in 2000 to be near Emily, who was teaching law at USD. Lillian died in 2001, and soon after, Tom met Shirley Durbin, whom he married in 2002. An intellectual with an abiding interest in sports, especially handicapping, he wrote 2 unpublished books, an autobiography and a book on thoroughbred horse racing. Privately, Tom was a warm, engaging and extremely attentive husband and father. Shortly before his death, he wrote to Shirley: "Five years together was not to be But I really treasure the final three With Emily's visits and you as my wife They truly have been the best in my life" Tom is survived by his wife, Shirley, daughter Emily, granddaughter Jenny, and 4 Durbin grandchildren, Greg, Russell, Jackie and Frankie.
