I enter into this forum with a bit of trepidation, since I am relatively new to the research on the Sherrill family. My g-g-g-grandparents were Josiah Marcum (Markham) (ca. 1798-ca. 3 May 1841) and Anna Sherrill (1802 ?-1830-1834). They were married 12 Jan 1822 in Wayne County, Kentucky (Ref: Wayne County, Kentucky Marriages, 1811-1833, Wayne County, Kentucky Genweb site). On Ancestry.com, Kentucky Marriages 1802-1850, this record shows as Josiah Markham and Anna Neaville, obviously a misinterpretation by the transcriber. They had three children: Ransom A Marcum, b. 16 Dec 1822 in Wayne County, Ky--d. 17 Jan 1900 in Henry County, Iowa; Sarah Brown "Sallie" Marcum, b. 11 Jan 1825 in Wayne County, Ky.--d. 9 Jan 1906 in Stone County, Missouri; Marvel B Marcum, b. Aug 1827 in Wayne County, Ky--d. 1 Sep 1902 in Chillicothe, Livingston County, Missouri. After Anna Sherrill died Josiah married her niece, Barbara Sherrill, the daughter of Eli Sherrill (and ?? Nancy McPherson) on 2 Dec 1834 in McMinn County, Tennessee. They were the parents of Eli Wilson Marcum, b. 14 Sep 1835 in McMinn County, TN--d.14 Dec 1902 in Sherman, Grayson County, Texas; Nancy Louisa Marcum, b. 1838; and Mary S Marcum, b. 1840. Josiah Marcum died intestate and Eli Sherrill, presumably his father-in-law, was appointed administrator of his estate on 3 May 1841. I have copies from the microfilm of the probate record. An abstract appears in Wills and Estate Records of McMinn County, Tennessee 1820-1870 by Reba Bayless Boyer. After Josiah's death Barbara married James Wilson, son of James Wilson and Dicy Murphree, on 3 Feb 1844 in McMinn County, TN. They had four children, Marguret Mahala, b. 10 Jan 1845-4 Aug 1936 in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri (she married Jesse Hartle); Martha M, b. 1849; Ezekial, b.1852; and Sarah Ann, b. 1854. Barbara can be found in 1880 in the household of her son E W Markam (sic) in Dennison, Grayson County, TX and in 1900 in the household of Jesse Hartle in Kinder Township, Cape Girardeau County, MO. Her birthdate is shown as Sep 1818, widow, mother of 8 children, 2 living. I am descended from Sarah Brown Marcum, who married Franklin Wilson in McMinn County, TN 20 Sep 1842. Family tradition says that her name came from her paternal grandmother, Sarah Brown, mother of Josiah Marcum. If my research is accurate, Anna Sherrill, wife of Josiah Marcum, was the daughter of Isaac Sherrill, b. 1768 and Rebecca ?. Isaac was the son of Aquilla Sherrill and Lucretia Wilson. I would be interested in corresponding with others who are researching this family.
