Gen. Sherman and the Masonic Lodge

There is, in my husband's family, a story about Gen. Sherman. It is told that when Sherman was routing Atlanta he approached the family home. Sherman was met at the door by the lady of the house. She argued with him and ordered him to leave. He noticed the Masonic emblem on the wall and agreed not to burn the property because he would not destroy a fellow brother's home.

I am interested in proving this tale true or false. Was Gen. W. T. Sherman a Mason?
